You have to feel sorry for any side that has to travel to fulfil a fixture midweek in the middle of the summer holiday season but its compounded when that side is travelling from Cumbria for a 7 pm kick off and that's exactly the task that faced Askam tonight, that travel is difficult on a Saturday never mind a midweek night. Soap could not afford to feel sorry for their visitors though as they needed a result to maintain a promotion push.
A very similar side to the one that played Shaw Cross Sharks on Saturday took to a wet field in the drizzle as the game kicked off slightly later than 7 pm. Crosfields are currently on a roll with 7 wins out of the last 8 in all competitions and 4 on the bounce in the league and the roll-on as it turned out was set to continue.
The game started very cagey with both sides banging out set after set with a mistake here and there, it wasn't until 11 minutes that we saw the game begin to stutter to life after Hooker Owen Bridle scooted over from 2 meters out with the conversion by Todd Steel for Askam to take the lead 0 v 6. Askam could have doubled the lead after a great break the Askam player was about 3 foot from the line when Alex Clutterbuck just managed to scrag him back from behind to save a definite try. Unfortunately, the Askam player appears to have suffered a dislocated Elbow in the tackle, Everyone at Crosfields wishes him a speedy recovery.
From 30 minutes onwards the game was all 1-way traffic with Soap dominating the game, whilst Askam had the odd foray deep into Crosfields territory Crosfields took the game by the scruff of the kneck and never looked back.
Mathew Barber started the scoring clattering over off an inside ball off Jack Reid who converted to level the scores 6 all.
On 33 minutes a Sweeping move from right to left sees Luke Walker bust the Askam line and pass to Josh Whitham who goes over for his first of the night. Reid again converts. 12 v 6
To finish off the first half Jack Reid kicks a penalty goal from 30 meters out to take Soap in at the break 8 points to the good 14 v 6
The flood gates opened pretty quickly after the break as Luke Walker scored on 42 minutes, a knock-on by Askam sees Crosfields pick up the loose ball and spread the ball to the opposite side of the pitch with great hands to find Luke Walker who strolls over for his first of the night. Reid again converts 20 v 6.
2 Minutes later and Josh Whitham scores to complete his brace. Hayden James makes 2 back to back breaks from hooker, soap run the ball on the last play with hands to Walker who feeds his winger perfectly to go over and make it 24 v 6.
On 48 minutes Jordan Williams chases an early kick to the corner from Jack Reid and just beat the full-back to the ball, toe pokes it Forward and then dives on the ball over the try line to score. 28 V 6
4 Minutes later and Crosfields are in again, this time on the back of a quick play the ball John Whittaker scoot's and runs hard to bust the defence and crash over. Jack Reid converts. 34 v 6
Another 3 minutes on and Soap are in again, this time its a first try playing for the first team for Sam Hickey as he supports a bust from John Whittaker who offloads for Sam to go in under the sticks. Sam is given the opportunity to kick the conversion and Bounces it off the crossbar from bang in front. 38 v 6
Try are now coming thick and fast for Crosfields and on 63 minutes, Louis Walsh's first touch of the game sees a neat little chip over from 20 out for Luke Walker to catch on the full and score his second of the game for Crosfields. Nathan Taylor converts 44 v 6.
Nathan Taylor finishes the scoring after Walker turned provider again, kicking through from the centre channel, Nathan stabs the ball on and dives on it over the line to bring Soaps scoring to an end for the evening 48 v 6 with the full-time whistle following a few minutes later.
Hayden James was awarded the Man of the Match by the opposition.
