U9′s defeat resilient Hindley

P9270048Crosfields Cobras U9′s 40 v Hindley U9′s 12

An overcast, cool morning saw an early KO against a very much improved Hindley side, who we had only played a few months ago, at the end of last season.

Captain for the day Spencer RUDD, won the toss, and Cobras attacked first. G-Man, Spence and Jamie B took the ball up strong, but met sturdy Wigan defence. Dave and his coaching team had obviously worked hard in the summer, that was evident straight away. Further drives by Webby and James G, set up position for Cam to score a great solo effort. 1-0.

Strong defence followed, and Tom Tom NEARY, Hally, and Jamie stood out early on. Turnover ball and runs by Hally, G-Man again and Harry WILCOCK  saw a run around between Jamie and Spence, which culminated in Jamie going over untouched. 2-0

The Hindley response was swift, and great relieving runs by their big fellas set up field position for their star man Ethan HILL, to show great strength, holding off 3 tacklers to score a great try in the corner. 2-1. Substitutions were made, and Rocky, Zak attack, Dutchy and Olly came on, and all 4 made an impact. Rocky took over the half back role, and quick distribution set up runs for Olly, Spence and Cam and a long pass from Hally put Spence into space, and his pace did the rest 3-1.

The game was being played in great spirit by two very committed sides, and Hindley came back again, Ethan scoring his second, following a very direct run to the line. Good score 3-2. Cobras had the last say before half time came, Jamie B, scored a great solo effort beating defender after defender 4-2. Half Time. I asked for the same commitment in the second half, and just to improve our line defence, which had been slow in getting off the line. Listen a bit more and control the ball better.

We listened to all that was said, and tackled strongly, Harry coming more into the game, ably supported by G-Man and Dutchy, all having their best games this season, by a long way. Having kept them at bay, Hally cleared his lines with a 40 yard run, continued by Spence and Zak, and finally Cam, who ghosted onto the ball, and sliced through for 5-2.

More great defence by Rocky, James, Dutchy and Tom Tom saw the ball come our way again, and a Rocky run carried on by G-Man, saw Hally take the ball in his own half and weave his way through the defence and power to the line for another great try 6-2. Hindley again took the ball up strongly at the Cobras line, and their approach work was great; a little more patience on our line would have reaped greater reward, and that will come Dave. Cobras had the ball again, and relieving runs by James G, Zak again and Webby, continued on by Olly, showing a nice step, and turn of pace, saw Tom Tom NEARY ghost through, as only he can, and on the last tackle Harry threw a perfect pass to Jamie B, which  saw him score his third 7-2.

Further changes were made, Jamie, Spence and Hally having a breather. Hindley lost the ball early and another strong Tom Tom run saw Rocky to Harry, then back to Rocky, in support for the best worked team try of the game for me.8-2.

Cobras were playing nice rugby now, and were organising themselves, as I hadn’t been on the field for the last 6-7 minutes. Well done fellas. We forced another turnover again, the tackling having improved in this half, Dutchy and G-Man, with Tom Tom showing up strong. A strong burst by the ever reliable Webby, continued by James G saw Tom Tom NEARY get his reward for his efforts with a fine individual score. 9-2.

Hindley could well have thrown the towel in by now but hadn’t, showing great resilience, and commitment. They came down field, and set it up perfectly for Ethan HILL to complete his hat trick, and make his very frustrated dad, very proud. Fantastic effort Ethan-Well Done. 9-3. Cobras had the last say though; an excellent run by Spence (back on) saw Harry the ghost, power his way past 4-5 defenders to score in the corner, taking us all by surprise, with his pace!!!!! 10-3. Full Time.

A very good game played with passion and commitment by two fair sides, Hindley, despite the score, showing great development and improvement in a short space of time. Keep up the great work fellas. Your running back and cover tackling was a joy to watch, not just one or two but 7-8 chasing!!

Continued improvement by the Cobras, and as I keep saying, week to week that’s all we can ask for. The last 10 minutes you had no direction on the pitch from me; it was all down to you lot-Well Done.

Shevington Sharks Under 11′s 18 Crosfields Cobras Under 11′s 24

Shev Sep 09A windy yet warm day greeted the Cobras when they finally arrived in Orrell.  Today was going to be an interesting encounter against a Shevington team unbeaten so far this campaign, also how would Crosfields react to  the reverse of the previous week.

The game got underway with some fantastic play from both sides.  Firstly the home side kicked off and Callum Talbot collected and ran the ball back hard.  Good drives from Josh Little, Alex Tinsley and Ben McWilliam moved the ball forward.  After trading sets the teams looked very evenly matched and this proved to be the case during the game.  On the next set a great flowing move from the Sharks saw them run in on the left hand corner to open the scoring from their number 15.

The first half was showing signs of being a classic and with great defence on show in the next sets would there be any more scores.  Kyle Brown and birthday boy Joe Hands really impressed in the tackle.  The game had the potential to go etheir way more good defence from George Brailey returning from injury and a fantastic tackle from joint top tackler for the day Thomas Davis, on the biggest player on the pitch, regained the ball.

On the next set Callum Southern really tucked the ball under his arm and drove hard, backed by Lloyd Halpin with a good run the chance came for Callum Talbot to dummy and go for a good score.  With the first half drawing to an end the tension was already building.  Good defence from James Kenny, with a real bear hug tackle, and one man defence from Danny Robb couldn’t stop the home side regaining the lead with a good try again in the corner from the stand out player of the first half number 7.

HT 10-6

The half time team talk was all about defence and trying to limit the threat from the home sides better players.  With this in mind joint top tackler Josh Little and Kyle Brown really got stuck into defence.  The game was now on a knife edge and boy was the noise levels from both sets of supporters rising.  Great play from Shevington allowed the number 1 to score in the left hand corner with a real wingers try.

Could the game have slipped away from the Cobras ? After last weeks game the Cobras had learnt how to dig deep on the next set good runs from Lloyd Halpin and Thomas Davis turned the Sharks defence.  Quick play allowed Man of the match Callum Talbot to throw out a cut out pass for Callum Southern to power over and score a try that is quick becoming his trademark.

This was now game on at 16-12, great defence again from Joe Hands and coaches award winner Danny Robb showed that the visitors knew the next score was vital.  With the ball back Crosfields drove hard with Ben McWilliam having another great game.  A break from George Brailey was backed up by Joe Hands who made good yards, quick dummy half play from Lloyd Halpin saw Alex Tinsley score a true centres try dummying a pass and scoring.

The games was still in the balance, who would score next ?  Great defence once more from Thomas Davis and Josh Little resulted in great drives from James Kenny and Ben McWilliam.  With the Cobras seemingly lacking ideas on the last Alex Tinsley took the chance to jink over, with at least six sharks circling, and score.   With heart rates almost back to normal the sharks again went in with the number 1 scoring again.

The game today was a credit to both sides.  The TEAM showed that they can cope with what at times seemed a lost cause.  Well done to everyone today great to see all players contributing and supported all the way by Matty Pendulbury and Sam Martin.

Open Age 2nds V’s Folly Lane

IMG_0022Crosfields Alliance 24 Folly Lane 14

Crosfields secured their second win in this “stop-start” season. With Rochdale Mayfield having withdrawn and Haydock given “two weeks grace” from fielding a side, Crosfields find themselves going into October with only two games under their belt, and further disruption beckoning with postponements being granted for the Grand Final and Four Nations Final.

Crosfields’ coaches dilemma started early on Saturday, with 23 players available for selection. A dilemma that they hope will have every week this season.

Crosfields dominated the opening of the game and took an 8-nil lead, thanks to tries from Darren “Razor” Reynolds and Steve Lowe, before Folly Lane hit back with an unconverted try.

Mike Redmond extended the lead, showing glimpses of his earlier years at the club and Alex Channock converted for a14-4 lead.

The home side then rested on their laurels and Folly Lane took advantage, with two more tries, one of which was converted, to level the scores at 14-all.

Wise words from Coach Meakin, put Crosfields back on track. Consecutive sets gave the home side the possession and position they needed, allowing Tom Caswell to force his way over the line, for a try.

The victory was secured, when Alan Tieboult was released on the outside and, with no-one in front of him, was able to cross the line and make the conversion easier for Lowe, who completed the scoring, with a fine 24-14 win.

Crosfields have the players to do very well in this division, but they do need to turn their possession into more points.

Redmond led his team well and was supported by Caswell, Neil Savage and Andy Butler, in particular, whilst Danny Allen and Lowe made a good partnership at half back.

U14 Langworthy V Crosfields

Posted by saintlee On September - 26 - 2009 Comments Off

U13 scrum Vs St Esteve XIIICrosfields travelled to Salford to play a Langworthy team in great form having beat Moorfields and destroyed Leigh East the week before with a 62 point scoreline many have tipped them to be up there fighting for the honours at the end of the year we

The game started well with some dominant tackling and Will Wier forced an early Scrum, straight from this with some trademark handling skills Josh Hensey found himself in space getting before being tackled short of the line but a direct run and quick play the ball by Chris Jones gave Mike Rider room on the outside to score in the corner, conversion was missed by Kane Ditchfield

Langworthy went short from the kickoff which gave Crosfields good field position from the off, Prop Sean Nicol and back row and  Rob Boyne then gave the team the platform they needed with strong carries and quick play the balls before a quick shift of the ball saw Kane Ditchfield place a pin point kick straight from the training paddock kick into the hands of Widnes flyer David Winders to touchdown in the opposite corner, conversion was missed by Robson Boyne

Feeling confident  Crosfields started to expand their game with a great win against the head at the scrum led by the ever impressive Luke Cunningham and stand in pivot Jack Callaghan and Ryan Smith started to pull the strings directing the team around when scrum half Ryan Smith found a rampaging Phil Johnson on a short ball to charge under the sticks to score conversion was scored by Kane Ditchfield

A String of uncharacteristic errors and a number of wasted opportunities began to give Langworthy some hope, which was soon dashed with the immense defensive efforts of the entire Crosfields outfit, Will Wier,Connor Messenger and Kane Ditchfield in particular with some bone crunching shots managing to keep out Langworthy

HT Langworthy Reds 0 Crosfields 14

Second half started with a bang after only two tackles Sam Bennetts shot rebounding high and caught the Reds Loose Forward in the face, gave the home side an early look at the Crosfields line only for the kicker to go long and a 20m restart for the visitors which was taken quickly by Loose forward Kane Ditchfield and a 30m gain his quick play the ball gave Chris Joynson good yards and Josh Swift added imputus to his strong running style (as if it needs any help) before playing the ball quickly for Ryan Smith to kick diagonally to Kane Ditchfield who ended the set he started with a try which he also converted from the touchline

Straight from the kickoff Crosfields surged forward with good yards from Danny Garcia, Sam Bennet and Jack Oniell before a grubber behind the line saw Josh hensey race through gather and pass to Luke Cunningham only for the referee to rule it forward from an amazing 30m behind(i am constantly impressed with the skills of our officials)

With this decision still fresh in the Crosfields players minds, the home side took advantage of this lack of concentration with a good individual effort to score thier only try which was also converted

The game however was put beyond doubt soon after with a penalty for holding down by the homeside saw the quick thinking of Kane Ditchfiield tap and go on the halfway line raced forward and offload while held by two men to Robson Boyne who was tackled 10m out played the ball in super quick time for Ryan Smith to dance his way over for a try he converted

The game was played in fantastic spirit against a very impressive and extremely physical Salford outfit who did themselves and their coach proud

MOM – 1. Kane Ditchfield 2. Will Wier 3. Phil Johnson

U9′s win at West Bank

Crosfields Cobras U9′s  24 v West Bank Bears U9′s  16

Cobras travelled the short distance to Widnes to face an ever improving West Bank Bears side , in an excellent, entertaining game, played with great passion and enthusiasm by both sides.

Cobras rotational policy continued and 14 players took to the field, captain Scooter JERRAM winning the toss and onto the attack immediately were G-Man, Big B and Timps. An error ensued, due to good defensive pressure from the Bears and it was time to defend. Into the tackle were Monty, Timps, Tom WORTHINGTON and Jacob GALLOP, and stalemate followed for a couple of sets of six each. Both sides were tackling strongly, but seemed nervous with the ball in hand.

A crunching hit from Big B, forced turn over ball, which saw the same player take a heavy knock to the face, but he refused to go off, showing courage and commitment, testament to his own and the teams spirit. Strong carries by Harry, Cam and G-Man, saw Jacob step and shimmy his way over for the second week running. 1-0. However, from the next set, Bears scored on the last, going from acting half back to force their way over 1-1.

The game started to open up now, as defences were stretched, and AJ, Rocky, Olly, Mad Dog TAYLOR and Jamie all came on to add fresh impetus and enthusiasm to the cause. Great approach work, from MadDog, Olly and AJ saw Little Tom, receive the ball 30 yards out, and with an unbelievable step and speed off the mark, outpaced the cover to the corner. Great try 2-1. Half time already, fantastic game, both sides contributing.  I asked for the same effort and commitment in the second half, just needing to improve the line speed off the try line.

We defended strongly, Bears on the attack, and held out until the last again, Monty, Tom and Jamie racking the tackles up, and AJ also showing up strongly. Bears again went from acting half and excellent strength saw the player plonk the ball down, despite a fantastic effort by Harry to hold him up. 2-2.

Now Jamie had been pretty quiet since coming on, well marshalled by the Bears defence, but he broke hs shackles in he next set of six, and scored a typically Jamie special , showing power, speed and step 3-2. The game was end to end now, both sides playing well. A strong run out of defence by the Bears gave them field position, and a super step from Leon, saw him slice through our line 3-3.

This became 4-3 to the Cobras, when an excellent try from Cam, saw him show strength, speed and a fend to beat numerous defenders. Good one for the neutral this-great game. Bears responded again, and exposed our short side, to score an outstanding try 4-4. Take a breath and carry on. Cobras went up a gear now, AJ, Rocky and Timps making relieving runs, which was carried on by Cam again for his second 5-4. Big B again made a big hit, and took another bang to the head, now having a matching set of bumps on either cheekbone, he was finally forced to leave the field.

Cobras defence got stronger, and forced turn over ball, leading to  a final set of six, which saw the best set of the match. Scooter took the first, and running around the defence, was dragged down by great cover .The momentum was carried on by AJ, MadDog and G-man, leading to Cam throwing an excellent long pass to Jamie, taking out 3 defenders and creating space for him to finish off the scoring in the corner. Fantastic try, to end a great match 6-4.

A great advert for rugby, and a match played in excellent spirit by both sides. Passionate defence and strong attack, congratulations to both sides, and to Alan, Tommy and their team, and their continued improvement.

I have asked for us to improve our performance in each game, and we have done this so far, so let’s continue to do so, and put the effort into first training, then on match day. Well done all of you.

Under 11′s Cobras Go Down With A Fight

Oldham St Annes U11′s 24 Crosfields Cobras U11′s 18

A warm sunny day greeted Crosfields into the hills of Oldham.  The team arrived full of confidence given the strong start to the under 11 campaign.  The day had all the making for exciting rugby and boy did it not let any one down.

The game got underway with the Cobras kicking off and straight away it looked like the day would suit the pacy St Annes team.  Moving the ball well only strong defence from James Kenny and Thomas Davis kept the home side at bay.  With the ball Crosfields looked to move the ball passing well.  Good hands from Alex Tinsley and Callum Southern gained vital yards.

On the next set defences had looked strong but a gap was found by the pacy number 9 who scored and Cobras now had to prove they were up for the battle.  The returning Josh Little took the ball up and good yards from Callum Talbot allowed Thomas Davis the chance to scoot and level the scores with a try straight off the training field.

More defence was required, Dan James and Kyle Brown both bent their backs to put in some tackles.  With the a forced error the Cobras saw the chance and on the first tackle Ben Dixon crashed over to score a good try and give the visitors the lead for the first time.  As the first half drew to a close more defence from Danny Robb and Top tackler Thomas Davis couldn’t prevent a home try to send the teams in level at the break.

HT12-12

At the start of the second half Lloyd Halpin came in off the wing looking for work and almost danced his way to a try.  James Kenny and Callum Southern took the ball up.  With the ball back Oldham looked dangerous and the big forwards tested the defence.  A good show and go from the number 18 gave the home side the lead.

Were the Cobras heads going to drop ? definately not, more strong runs from Josh Little and Joe Hands enabled coaches award winner Callum Talbot to get a ball to Kyle Brown who made the pass of the match some how releasing Ben Dixon to score a good centres try and once again draw the scores level.  This wasn’t good for the heart,  both teams now looked out on their feet as the weather conditions began to take their toll.

On the next set the Cobras looked strong good running from Danny Robb backed by Lloyd Halpin came up just short and the home side took advantage.  With quick thinking they released a player down the right wing who danced along the touchline to score a great wingers try,  On the resulting sets the Cobras were shattered but Man of the match Thomas Davis, Alex Tinsley and Joe Hands kept the team moving.  But to no avail as the whistle went.

Today showed how the TEAM can handle pressure in tight games very much like last week.  There was very little dropped ball just a single score between the teams which ment the phrase ’I would have paid to watch that!!!’ was never more rightly said than by Oldham’s coach.

FT 24-18

These are a little late however as of publishing these the fixtures for the 16-18 league are still not on their website so there could still be some changes however I am hoping not. Everyone I have tried to contact today to get this sorted seems to have their phone switched off.

Please pay particular attention to your kick off times, we have tried to stagger them where possible so that there is less of a rush on the kitchen and space in the upstairs room, you may need to ok this with your referee.

It would also make sense to keep all of the lads in the changing room together after the game so that they go upstairs together and all get fed at the same time. Could coaches please accomodate?

Every team will need to Bag up, Do not use changing rooms one and 2 as the Open Age football are at home on Sunday

If anything changes you need to contact me and OK the change with me and then also contact the catering staff if your change is agreed to.

Shevington 30 Crosfields 16

Posted by pradley On September - 22 - 2009 Comments Off

IMG_0068A disappointing mornings work by SOAP U13s at Shevington. Off the back of some disarray in the defensive line, the hosts stormed into a 16-0 lead within the first 12 mins. Gradually the team discovered some desire to defend and shortly before half time scored through Thomason in the corner (16-4). Following the break, the team seemed more determined and organised and scored early through a typical Spedding burst and extras from Rice (16-10), but in truth the intensity was never there for the team all game and Shevington scored soon after to stretch the lead (20-10). Off the back of some field position, a determined run from Millington resulted in a try superbly converted by Clutterbuck from the sideline (20-16) which could have ignited the team to go on and win. However the frailties in defence returned following indecision from the kick-off resulted in a knock-on and the hosts scored soon after to stretch out to 24-16. Although the lads never gave up the ghost and continued to strive for the win the hosts scored a long range effort at the death to leave the final score 30-16. Good results are earned by hard work and desire which were sadly lacking today. A lesson learned by all, I hope!
