U9′s use their “Head” to continue form

Crosfields Cobras U9′s 40 v Waterhead U9′s 16

On an overcast Sunday morning, young Cobras welcomed a large Waterhead squad to Hood Lane, and both sides served up a fantastic game of mini rugby, played in excellent spirit. Cobras continued their form of late, and were buoyant following a half time appearance at the Warrington v Leeds match at Headingly on Friday. All 15 who made the trip to Leeds, turned out in a chaotic 10 minute run out against a strong Stanningley side, who had 13 to match us. Not much rugby was able to be played on the minute pitch, but the smiles on all the faces told the story, in front of over 16,000 spectators. What a fantastic experience for all the players. Highlight of the 0-0 draw was Boomer Stephensons hit on a Stanningley forward-rapturous applause from the avid watchers-well done Boomer, and all the boys. The result as ever was irrelevant, and rugby the winner again. You represented yourselves, your club and Warrington with pride and conducted yourselves accordingly.

Back to Sundays game, and I asked all 12 players to carry the enthusiasm and the memory of the Leeds night into this match, which they all did. Captain for the day Spence won the toss, and we attacked first.  AJ, Timps, Boomer and Hally took us into an attacking position, and Harry threw his trademark dummy to open the scoring. 1-0. Defending now, and Hally, carrying on from last week, was first into the tackle, and went on to win top tackler with a phenomenal 22 tackles, proving beyond doubt he had his MOJO back, which had been missing recently. Well done you. Harry, Monty James and Timps carried on the good work, and we had the ball back.

We continued to run strong, Boomer. Timps and AJ, who took a massive hit (he doesn’t half attract them), but moving the ball wide the kiler pass went down, from Harry-unlucky guys. Another big hit by Hally and Harry spilled the ball, and we had it again. A strong run and offload by Hally was carried on by Timps, and then Harry took over again and created space for Spence, whose finishing power did the rest, despite the excellent covering attempt by the Waterhead player. 2-0.  Waterheads response was swift, as they came down field and scored a deserved try, after strong defence again by Monty, AJ and James. 2-1.

End to end continued, and Timps, Spence and Monty, assisted by Boomer  gave the platform, and Harry again was the provider for Winger Timps to crash over in the corner. 3-1. Webby, G-Man and Olly came on, and were straight into the speed of the game, and a cruncher from Hally, Webby and Harry saw the ball spilled. We then saw a 3 pronged turnover follow when great hits knocked the ball loose. Following a turnover, what I have always asked for happened, when Cam made up for the error, by chasing the Waterhead runner down and forcing the error back-absolutely brilliant, well done Cam. Timps cashed in again, when after strong surges by G-Man, and Olly, Boomer turned creater when he dropped off the runner-Timps. 4-1.

Back came the Oldham side again when they scored another excellent try, 4-2.  The Oldham n0.18 was scything everything down, and despite the best efforts of Webby and G-Man, the ball was squeezed out again.  A Boomer special saw the ball back with us, and Timps again was unlucky when he double moved.  The match was being played at a fantastic pace, and both sides were running and tackling strong. G-Man, Boomer and Hally were racking the tackles up, and a great cover by Hally saw the ball offloaded to the supporting Waterhead player, brilliant team try. 4-3.

Waterhead were playing with a lot more confidence now, and another break, was again covered by both Hally and Spence, who saved a certain try, followed up by a copybook cruncher from Hally again. Love it.  Boomer, Harry and G-Man had the smell today, and were hitting everything in the middle. This was a great game to watch. Half Time 4-3. I asked us to remain patient, keep the strong running and increase the defensive effort even more. The boys responded to my request, and a cracking second half followed.

The opening set of the half saw strong defence on the line, particularly from Spence, Hally, G-Man and Boomer again, and we then responded with a fantastic Hary Wilcock break, but went into touch. More sturdy defence saw the Oldham lads kept at bay, and then a great run by Cam, saw Spence go over in the corner. 5-3.  Substitutions were made, Harry, Boomer and Timps taking well deserved rests and AJ, James and Monty returning. A stalemate followed, James and Monty getting through some work, and Hally and AJ forcing a turnover.

One of the moments of the match followed, when on a rabbit set, Olly took the 3rd hit up, and got absolutely “Mullered” by a peach of a tackle, and unfortunately had to leave the field, to return later-Well Done Olly. Another Harry special followed, after he came back on for Olly, when he again showed the ball and went-superb. 6-3.  Turnover followed again, due to excellent defence, and a Webby burst, continued on by Cam, who took a gem of a pass from Hally, saw Spence cross in the corner-great try. 7-3.

More defensive pressure from G-Man saw the ball with us again, and Spence made the ground for Boomer, with his first touch, back on for Harry, scored a well deserved individual effort. 8-3. Tight defence again saw the ball spilled, Boomer, Monty snd James  looking strong, and James took the ball back in hard, for AJ to break the line, lose his boot, but still manage to run 30 yards for an excellent try. 9-3. Waterhead never gave it up showing excellent commitment and resilience, and the little n0.12 scored a great try, beating 2 defenders on the way. 9-4.

Timps completed the scoring with a great individual burst, and fend to crash over. 10-4. Hat trick for Timperley!! Some outstanding copy book defence followed, from Hally, then Cam, who stopped runners dead, to keep the line secure. This was the key to the second half-strong, committed defence. Full Time 10-4

A very good performance, particularly second half again, where committed solid defence and the willingness to run hard and support the ball carrier paid massive dividends. An excellent match, in which Waterhead more than played their part. Well done to both squads for a superbly entertaining game of rugby.

Cobras U9′s back into the “Red”

Posted by Mark Hall On May - 18 - 2010 Comments Off

Langworthy Reds U9′s 16 v Crosfields cobras U9′s 24

Cobras returned to winning ways, following a hard earned victory at Swinton, against a massive Reds outfit. Following 3 consecutive defeats, despite playing well, young Cobras were looking to get back to doing the basics, and a performance was needed. Captain for the day was Rocky Rosslyn, who was in charge of a smaller squad of 11, due to unavailability. Winning the toss, we attacked first.

Playing on a very small pitch, against a huge physical side ground was going to have to be made the old fashioned way, and an opening set saw Big B, Tom Tom Neary, Jacob and Rocky hit the ball up, with a modicum of success. The last tackle was moved wide, but Boomer ended up on the end of it, and the attack petered out.  Quickly out of the line, were Jamie and Tom Tom, and following 2 good hits, the ball was spilled, and turned over, so back onto the attack in the Reds half.

Strong runs by Zak Attack, Stallion, who gets better with every match, and seems to glide over the ground and Jamie took us close, and Captain Rocky skirted round the defence as only he can for the first score. 0-1.  The Reds response was to move the ball wide, and only a great cover tackle into touch stopped a certain try. Cobras seemd to be getting stronger, and strong drives by Hally, Tom Tom, Olly then Rocky made excellent ground, but the momentum was stopped when Rocky again, ran into the 2 biggest players on the pitch on the last and got crunched- OUCH!!

Reds again on the attack, and Hally, who appeared to have his MOJO back, made two superb tackles stopping Big Big Max dead in his tracks-nice one son. This carried on and another cracker stopping the even bigger N0.9, by Stallion, and a gang tacjle meant we had kept the line in tact. Taking the ball away from the line strongly were Tom Tom twice, Zak Attack and Stallion, and the ball was stripped, and the tackle count started again. A very good tackle on Jamie saw the ball spill though, and the opportunity for further points was wasted.

Two rapid drives were kept out by excellent covering from Tom Tom and the momentum was just what the Reds required, as they crashed over in the corner for a well worked try. 1-1. This seemed to give the Reds a massive confidence boost, and folloing more turn over ball, they came straight back onto the attack and the No.9, who due to his size, was the main attacking weapon near the line crashed over, as we fell away from the tackle. 2-1.  It was becoming more and more apparent that our tacklers apart from a few, didn’t fancy taking their big units, and heads dropped.

Zak, Olly and Tom Tom took breathers and Spence, Dutchy and Cam came on to bolster the team. All 3 were immediately into their stride, with excellent runs and offloads, but the Reds defence held strong, and the ball went to ground. Reds were running strong now, and only a forward pass kept them out. Further turn over by the Cobras saw the Reds score again, when a one on one was missed, and Reds scored a fantastic try. 3-1. The awful form continued when Rocky took the first ball and was tackled into touch. Half Time.

I told a few home truths at half time, and stated that a lot of the players were letting themselves down, and were not performing anywhere near how they can, and I asked Jamie to take control of this game in the middle. Apart from his defence he had been very quiet! What a turn around followed, harsh words, for the first time this season worked.

Reds hit it up fast, but the defence was up for it now, and absolute cruncher from Rocky and Boomer on Big Max, set the pattern. Jamie followed it up with another one and then Stallion did 3 on the trot to snuff out the attack. Excellent committed running by Jamie, Spence, Boomer then Cam, saw the ball pass through lots of hands, only to be halted with a strip. Back to 0, and start again!! A second strip followed, but the momentum was with us. Boomer was held up short, and Jamie too held up, but Cam took the ball at pace, stepped and scored. Brilliant. 3-2.

Reds hit it up again but the defence was different in this half, Jamie, assisted by Hally and stallion hiitting everything, and Reds were forced into touch. A perfect set of 6 followed, with Spence, Cam, Rocky, Spence again and Stallion all taking the ball down field, for Jamie to duck, weave ad dive over for the equalising score. 3-3. Different team this half to say the least! Hally, Boomer and rocky took a rest for Zak, Olly and Tom Tom to return.  A strong recovery by the Reds saw them score a well deserved try  when for the first time in the half we fell away on the line. Well done Reds, one for the neutral this one !! 4-3.

Spence, Cam then Tom Tom laid the foundatios, and stallion glided in as only he can, taking time out from defending. Great score 4-4. Reds were straight back into it again, and a miss in the middle put them on opur line, but bodies on the line b y Tom Tom, Jamie, Stallion and Zak, assisted by Olly and Dutchy kept them out. A brilliant relieving run by Stallion saw a knock on follow, and old habits appeared to be creeping back in. Back onto defence, and Zak and Tom tom again hit them, for Stallion to halt a certain try by taking the N0.9 into touch-worth the admission money alone.

attack again, the match was end to end now, and Tom Tom, Olly and Spence took us forward, for Spence again to straighten the attack up, and pop the ball into the supporting hands of Jamie. 4-5. Great team score. Last set of 6 each, and first tackle saw Cam smash the runner, who spilled the ball. With the match looking secure, Olly took us back onto the attack, with a great run, then Jamie, Spence and Cam combined again for the try of the match, which Cam scored in the corner.. Full time 4-6.

This was definitely a game of 2 halves, and all credit to the Reds, and Bobbi, who has done a fantastic job with his small squad, some fantastic players there.  The half time “talking to ” obviously did the trick, but we should be playing like we did in the second half, in both halves. Credit to the boys though, who listended, rolled their sleeves up, and put in the right performance in that half to recover the match. Well done all of you.

Cobras stung by Hornets

Posted by Mark Hall On May - 3 - 2010 Comments Off

Crosfields Cobras U9′s 12 v Halton Farnworth Hornets U9′s 16

Young Cobras bad run continued, on a cool Bank Holiday Sunday morning, against a determined Hornets side from Widnes. Withdrawals and unavailability meant that Hally and Big B were draught in to bolster the squad to 12, and captain for the day Webby won the toss and we attacked first.

We started with a perfect set, when strong drives by James, Webby and AJ took us deep into Hornets territory, and the impetus was continued on by Harry and Rocky, for a slipped pass, to Jamie, saw him step and fend his way over 1-0. Great start.

Hornets appeared tentative, and strong defence, by Jamie, Monty, Harry and AJ kept them out, and turnover ball was conceded, following a typical cruncher from Jacob on the left flank. The strong running continued, with AJ, Webby and James laying the platform, but what was becoming more and more evident, was that Hornets were hitting high, and getting away with it, as the official seemed oblivious. AJ, in particular was coming in for the majority, and you could see the boys falter slightly. In total contrast, the Hornets were gaining in confidence, and mixed with some excellent defence were knocking us out of our stride.

A couple of sets of 6 each followed, and both sides defended well, Harry, Cam and Jacob prompting for openings, which were thwarted. The next set of 6 saw Hornets draw level, when solid approach work led to the little winger skirting the defence, and despite appearing in touch, thanks to Jamie and Jacobs efforts, the try was given, by the “ 4th official”. 1-1.

Cobras were back into their game quickly, when Harry, twice, Rocky and Jamie laid the foundation for the ever improving Jacob, to take time out from tackling to glide over, untouched 2-1.(apologies Stallion, in my after match delivery I credited Jamie with all 3 tries!). Changes were made, and James and Webby, who had both been having strong games, made way for Hally, B and Zak too came on for Rocky.

All three were straight into the game, but on his first carry, Big B took another high shot, which totally knocked the stuffing out of him, a hit he never really recovered from. The ball ended up back with the Hornets and great approach work again, led to them crossing for a well worked try close in 2-2. A stalemate then followed for the next set each, and we had half time. 2-2.

I asked for us to be patient, with the ball, get it out faster, and to move up in defence, which we hadn’t done in the first half, despite the scores being level. Hornets attacked first in this half, and Hally, B and Monty were showing up well, assisted by Harry, Jamie and Jacob in particular. The set ended with a great one on one by Cam, saving a certain score.

Cobras had the ball again, but Hornets had become stronger in defence, not always legal, but the referee, finally advised the Widnes side about their high tackles, still without penalty, and the young Cobras were becoming visibly frustrated, and disillusioned. To add insult to injury, held was not being called, and we were being driven back time and time again. Zak and Monty both tried to drive the ball away from the line but were driven back, almost over the line itself, and again despite Jamie, Cam and B trying to up our game, we turned the ball over.

Hornets then had a try disallowed as the big N0.10 dropped it over the line as he looked certain to score, but they gained their reward, as following another turnover, a strong run, saw the defence stepped-excellent try. 2-3. Cobras response was also swift, as James, Webby and Rocky had returned for AJ, Harry and Monty, and again despite little ground being made, Jamie took the ball 15 metres from his own line, and stepped, and cut through, to race 50 metres to score a fantastic individual try 3-3.

We continued to probe, with Jamie, Jacob and Cam looking the most likely, but the Hornets defence was scrambling well, and kept their line in tact. A couple of blank sets followed, with Cam, making some superb copy book one on ones, which saved certain tries. They went back onto the attack, and another controversial moment followed, when a great run by the Hornets No.10, saw him stopped, and a full SEVEN seconds followed without HELD being called, again, and the lad offloaded to the supporting No.7 on the line to score the match winning try 3-4.

Yes we should play to the whistle, but the players were all totally confused by what was happening, and I could see players, who never open their mouths asking questions!! Two more blank sets followed, and the game came to an end. 3-4.

A strange game for me this one, which started off well with both teams playing good rugby, but deteriorated, with some strange calls (or lack of them) as the match progressed. Hornets to their credit played to the whistle, as you always should, and deserve credit for that and their resilience. Our boys deserved more out of the game, than they got, and must be praised for their efforts. Decision making and option taking again let us down at vital times, but keep on smiling, and playing from the heart first, and from the head second!!

Cobras U9′s extinguish the Dragons fire!!

Atherton Dragons U9′s 16 v Crosfields Cobras U9′s  36

Cobras continued their fine recent away form with a fantastic performance at Atherton Dragons on a sunny Sunday morning in Manchester.  A squad of 13 made the short journey, and captain for the day James GERAGHTY won the toss, and we started on the attack.

The forwards took the ball up first, testing the Dragons defence, G-Man, Jack and James paving the way, then Harry took over, first releasing Jamie then a long pass to try and release Cam was put down, and good Dragons defence had forced a turnover. Big HENRY was first up for the Cobras defence, and it took 5-6 to take him down (he is a big old unit), following this came a break which was covered back by Jamie, then Harry came up with a crunching hit to break up the attack. Dragons threw the ball wide, but Jacob and Rocky broke the attacks up, and passing the ball along the line again it went to ground.

The same forwards hit it up again, G-Man, Jack and James, before Harry threw one of his trade mark dummies, went through the gap, but the pass to the support players went to ground- unlucky. It was coming you could sense it. Dragons attacked again and HENRY took it up first but Jamie stopped him, with a copy book tackle ably assisted by Monty. The ball was passed down the line again, and the very lively No. 4 who was looking dangerous with every touch tried to outpace the cover, but Jacob was up to the task, and along with Monty and Jamie kept them at bay.

G-Man again took the ball up strong, making good yardage, carried on by Harry, who made a fantastic break, but the cover recovered. The momentum was continued by James, then Rocky took over, and beating 4 defenders scored a great try in the corner. 0-1. On the defence again, and Monty and G-Man were hitting strong, followed by a cruncher from James, who stopped man and ball dead in his tracks. Dragons tried to go wide again, and were constantly probing for an opening, but Jacob and Rocky had the flank sewn up. A frustrated long floated pass was plucked out of the air by Cam “The Poacher” Henderson, who embarked on a 50 meter dash to the line. Excellent reading of the game 0-2.

Dragons continued to play rugby and were causing problems for the Cobras but the line stayed in tact, with Monty, Jamie,  Harry and in particular Jacob and Rocky scrambling well. Jack and G-Man lending their weight to the cause in the middle. Steady progress was being made, but a lost ball saw turn over conceded. A rabbit set followed, away from our line, when first Harry then Jamie made superb meters down field, and only a brilliant cover tackle stopped Jamie from scoring a great try. Well Done Dragons N02-superb commitment. Subs came on, Zak, Spence, Webby and Tom Tom Neary for Jack, James, Monty and G-Man. Added impetus.Further drives, by Tom Tom, and probings by Harry came to nought as Rocky tried to repeat try 1, but was caught in possession on the last.

Webby, who has really impressed me in the last few games, was straight into the tackles, making 3 out of the next 4, and only a great cover tackle by Jamie kept the line in tact, until on the last we defended the dead ball line, instead of the try line and a simple scoot made it 1-2. Well spotted Dragons. Spence immediately took the ball up hard, and made a 40 meter bust before Rocky, learning from every game ran at the defensive gap where the ref is and the line couldn’t close quick enough. Great opportunist try. 1-3. Half time. I was very pleased with our efforts, particularly with the ball, but asked us to step it up in defence, particularly technique.

Dragons attacked first, and after a good gang tackle dropped the ball on the second. The foundations were then laid, with solid hit ups from Webby, Spence and Zak, giving the platform for Harry to create space for Jamie, step, and inevitably a 30 meter dash to the line 1-4. Great start. Dragons response was swift, strong carries took us onto the back foot, and a missed tackle allowed the strong running N0.11 to run to the line 2-4. Nice try.

Another good set of 6 followed, and excellent running by Webby, Spence GMan and Tom Tom Neary twice saw us move the ball at speed along the line, but the killer pass went down. Good defence followed, and Webby, Marcus and Harry showing up well. We then took the game back to the Dragons, and drives by Spence, Zak, Webby and Jamie took us within striking distance for Harry again to put Tom Tom away down the flank, and he scored a great try that took some scoring. Welcome back Tom NEARY!! 2-5.

Dragons response again was immediate, 2 drives took them down field, and a super step by the excellent N0.4 took him around the cover 3-5. Super individual try. The game was end to end now, and after Webby and Zak hit the ball up, Spence created his own space with a fine step, and raced 30 meters for another great individual try. 3-6.  Again immediate reply, No.2 scoring another fine individual try. 4-6.

Webby again and a strong James burst, saw Jamie onto the ball, show and go the rest is history. Acceleration did the rest. 4-7. Jack came back for Zak, and excellent defence again particularly by Cam, who intercepted again to break up the Dragons attack, saved the line. Lung busting run by Spence cleared the line, and was carried on by Tom Tom and Jacob; Jamie had taken over from Harry as creator now, and dummied, made the space which is all Spence needed, showing excellent awareness and support play to score in the corner. 4-8.

A brilliant defensive set followed, Cam again in the thick of it, and the line was again kept in tact. Turn over ball saw us end up in touch, and the last set followed for the Dragons. They battered the line, and knocked at the door, and even a repeat set  couldn’t see them repeat theair earlier heroics, Spence standing out, well supported by Jack and Tom Tom.   Desperate passing ensued, and poor HENRY threw a long one and it was again plucked out of the sky by the ever alert Cam, who raced 60 meters unopposed, to dive”Super League Style” under some imaginary posts! Great finish. 4-9.

This was a great game of rugby, and we scored some fantastic team tries today, but the scoreline didn’t reflect the Dragons effort and commitment, and at times they totally stretched us defensively, with some fine attacking play. I have watched the DVD twice now, and they are a good side, and I personally look forward to meeting them again.  Lets continue this fine away form at home fellas, and upgrade our tackling, particularly the technique. Well done, all of you very proud as always!!

Cobras U9′s bounce back at L.East !!

Posted by Mark Hall On April - 3 - 2010 Comments Off

Leigh East U9′s  16 v Crosfields Cobras U9′s  28

Cobras bounced back from last weeks disappointing effort, to register a fine team performance at Leigh East, on a crisp sunny spring morning. A squad of 11 players made the short journey along the East Lancs, and the parents and supporters were rewarded by some excellent tries. Captain for the day, Dutchy HOLLAND won the toss, and we attacked first.

We started with the perfect set of 6, as strong drives by AJ, Hally and Webby laid the foundations for Harry to take over and spread the ball wide early, giving the killer pass, to send Cam into the corner; 1-0. Excellent start, strong running and ball wide, exactly the opposite of last week. A great hit by AJ, on the first tackle saw the ball lost forward, and we had the ball back.

Direct running by Rocky, followed up by AJ, saw a great tackle by the East No.1 stop him dead in his tracks. Harry offloaded to Hally, who made good metres, and a quick play the ball, and excellent service from Rocky to Harry, saw the ball go wide again, to be put down- unlucky. AJ followed up his strong attacking start with some impressive hits, well supported by Harry, Monty and Webby, and the ball was lost again. Excellent East defence, especially by the lively No.1, kept Cobras out, and after relieving runs by Spence, Cam and Rocky, we ended up in touch.

East started to throw the ball about, but the Cobras defence was up to it this week, and were sliding and scrambling well, Spence, Dutchy and Hally, supported by Cam and Rocky thwarting their attacks. Harry, Webby, Monty and AJ looking very strong down the middle. The game was being played at a great pace, and East were playing well, but AJ and Hally were up for it, and great cover tackles by Rocky, followed by 2 crackers from Harry kept them at bay again.

The try of the match followed, when great carries by AJ, Spence then Webby, set the platform again for Harry to pass onto Cam, who cut back inside, and following a weaving run, when halted by the cover offloaded to Spence to score a fantastic try in the corner. 2-0. Another good set by East saw them actually get over the try line, but the ball was bounced and no try was the decision!

Olly and Timps came on for Dutchy and Webby, and another strong defensive set, AJ, Monty and Harry showing up well again saw turnover ball. The game was end to end now, and again strong surges by Timps, Cam and then offloads saw Rocky held up short. The ball was moved back the opposite way, but the pass dipped in the wind, and the try went begging. The next score came following great approach work by Monty and AJ, and finally Cam who stepped, and weaved for his second. 3-0. A last set of 6 followed for East, but again sturdy defence especially by Cam, Spence and Monty saw a ‘piley on’ at the last tackle for the half time whistle to go.  HT 3-0 to Cobras.

I thought we had played an excellent half of rugby and told the lads to keep up the work, and to keep moving up together in defence. East started with the ball in the second half, and attacked well, moving the ball from left to right, but Hally, Monty and Spence kept them at bay. The tackling was being spread out, amongst the players and everybody was getting stuck in.  East seemed to want to get a bit more physical in this half, and an edge came into the game, which saw handbags at 5 paces, and the No.1 and Harry were sent to the side to cool down for a bit.

Match continued East on the attack, and only brilliant tackling by Olly, Hally and Cam kept them out, until the ball squirted loose from a tackle and when all the Cobras players stopped the East No.10 scooped the ball up and scored. Always play to the whistle guys, the ball went backwards!! 3-1 Cobras came straight back, when Spence and Timps set up field position for Harry to pass to Webby who dropped off Spence again to skirt around the cover, and score in the corner. 4-1.

The game was getting stretched now, and AJ and Monty had been replaced by Webby and Dutchy, who were straight back into the tackle. East were running stronger than ever and another great tackle by Hally, to stop the ever direct No.12, was repeated by Cam out wide, but we then fell off the next one for East to cross for their second 4-2. Well done fellas, nice try. Spence, Olly and Harry took play into the East half, and Timps saw glory, but plonked the ball down on the corner cone (which is out Timps despite your protestations!!) so East had the ball again.

More in your face defence by Olly, Spence and Hally saw the ball dropped, and Webby took the first one up hard, making good ground, and Spence then broke the cover to run 30 metres for an excellent score. 5-2. Straight back again came East to make it 5-3, another close range try, when after good sturdy defence, we fell away at the vital time. Hit ups by Cam, Rocky, Olly and Hally, saw Harry again take over, and changing the direction of play with his own inimitable dummy he put Cam into space. Superb dive 6-3. Hat trick each to the 2 best mates!!!!!

Straight from the play the ball the East No.12 broke the line, and the momentum saw them cross for a great try 6-4. Last set of 6 to Cobras, and AJ returned for Hally. First Dutchy, then AJ made massive metres, continued on by Rocky, saw the icing on the cake from a personal perspective, when Harry threw the most outrageous dummy, which half the East team, myself as ref. and most of the spectators all took – TRY. 7-4. Well done HARRY. Full time.

A very good game, played with great passion by two committed teams, who were willing to throw the ball about, and entertain. A far better team performance by the young Cobras; but we still go to sleep on our own line, at times. Well done everybody, and at last the work, with and without the ball, is now being spread amongst the 9 on the pitch. Excellent. Well worth a viewing this one on DVD, parents.

Young Cobras travelled the short distance to face local rivals Newton Storm, and 12 made the journey, Captain Andrew ‘AJ’ Jobling, won the toss, and we attacked first. Recent games between these two sides, have never seen a bigger margin than one try, and today was no exception.

Big B, G-Man and Timps took the ball up strong, and a dummy run from G-Man again, saw the ball into Rocky’s hands, and he held off 3 defenders, to get the ball down somehow. 1-0. Great start. Storm came straight back, and excellent line defence by B, G-Man in particular, and The Barber, along with a cover tackle from Hally, saw the line in tact.

Again big hit ups by B, G-Man, Jamie and AJ took us down field, and a quick play the ball from Hally to Rocky, saw him change the direction of the attack, and score in the opposite corner. 2-0. Back on the defensive, but the good start didn’t continue, and after Jack, G-Man and Jacob holding them up, we fell away from the 4th tackle, and Storm scored a determined try. 2-1.

Straight back down field again, with the same battering rams making the yards, first B, then G-Man, and Timps, saw us near the line, when a controversial moment followed (according to the Newton match report anyway!!) The play the ball, hit the acting half back on the leg, and the loose ball was picked up by AJ, who took the tackle, which Storm officials thought was a scoot (I have watched the match 3 times now on DVD, and it wasn’t a scoot guys-sorry! You still won). The following play the ball saw Jamie offload to Big B, who crashed over in the corner 3-1…He took a knock in the process.

Dutchy entered the fray and B took a breather, but the momentum now swung towards the Storm, who had found their feet, and were running strong. Poor defensive technique saw them crash over for a solid response. 3-2. This game was following the pattern of the previous 3 – tight. More one man rugby, which is so easy to defend against, and Storm were strong defensively down the middle, saw Dutchy, G-Man, Rocky and Jack take us to a good attacking position, but the ball was spilt on the next.

Further changes were made, Hally and Timps came off for Olly and Zak attack, who were both straight into the tackle. A strong hit by Jamie, assisted by Zak, seemed to have stopped the attack, but we fell away from the tackle and he ran 40 yards for an excellent score. Poor from our point, but sheer determination and playing to the whistle! We stopped, thinking he was held, and that we had done enough – harsh lesson there!! 3-3. A very direct run by AJ, saw Jamie hit the ball at speed, and spin and fend to score in the corner. Excellent response 4-3.

Turnover ball followed, with a strong tackle into touch, then Rocky, G-Man, Olly and AJ took us towards the Storm line for a loose pass to go to ground. Good defence, but awful technique kept the score the same, Dutchy, Jamie and AJ especially racking tackles up. Half Time 4-3. I asked for us to up our game, as the good start had been let slip, and our defensive unity was non existent, and above all we needed to complete the tackle.

The very first set of six saw us fail to come off the line, and despite holding out for 5, we fell for the 5 card trick again and a scoot saw the Storm player crash over 4-4, and nothing less than their industry deserved. Runs by Olly, Zak, Rocky, G-Man and AJ, saw us trying to batter our way over the line, and playing no rugby at all. Storm defence again held, and we couldn’t get away from playing this easy to read rugby, despite the promptings from the side. All credit to Newton though, they looked more interested and committed to the cause than the Cobras, who had all gone into their shells.

Storm could smell blood, and strong running coupled with poor tackling saw them cross again near the line to go into the lead 5-4. Hally and Timps had returned, and B to bolster the cause. However, we were still not listening to the coach’s directions from the side, and the battering ram approach continued. Brechan, then Timps laid the foundation for AJ to cross for a personally well deserved try. 5-5.

A few stalemate sets followed, with both defences holding out, Zak going close for Cobras, but apart from one 2 pass, between Hally and B, who made good ground, one out rugby continued. Storm always looked sharper on the ball, and more likely to score, and that is exactly what happened.  Strong sets of 6 saw the Storm line hold on 3 occasions, then a simple hit and spin scoot again on the last (when will we learn) saw Storm cross for the winning score. 6-5.

One last effort by the Cobras saw panic rugby meet sturdy defence, and the final whistle went.  I didn’t need to speak to the players after the game, they all felt they had let themselves down, and knew they hadn’t played well. Praise though were praise is due, the better team on the day won. Storm were hungrier and more committed, and deserved their win; you could see the joy on their faces. What a contrast in faces, but we can never fault the fellas efforts and commitment. We just need to listen a lot more, and get away from this battering ram approach. We learn from every match, and let’s look forward to the next one. Keep smiling fellas.

Crosfields Cobras U9′s  16 v Rylands Sharks U9′s  16

Cobras faced local rivals Rylands for the second time this season, and after the first match up, this game was eagerly anticipated.

Captain for the match ended up being Jack Taylor, after a timing issue with a couple of players, and losing the toss we defended first. Sharks looked hungry, and we did well to keep them at bay for the first set, Harry, Spencer and Jacob getting stuck in early, well assisted by the man of the moment, Rocky Rosslyn, whose timing was impeccable again. It was a joy to watch.

A couple of sets each passed, without the scoreboard being troubled, due to passion and massive commitment in defence, and fine scrambling defence also. The work was being shared out amongst the whole team, and hard into the drive were G-Man, Webby, Cam and Captain Jack. Defences held though, but the deadlock was broken when Sharks offloaded brilliantly in the tackle for the support player to skate over in the corner. Excellent try 0-1.

The response was swift, when following the introduction of Big B, Jamie, Hally and James G, a platform was laid for Rocky to gather the ball at speed, step and break the line to run 40 yards untouched. I thgought I was shouting loud, but I couldn’t be heard over his mums voice!! Individual brilliance 1-1. The game had livened up now, and Sharks were playing some great rugby,  supporting the carrier well, and were rewarded with a second, when the little n0.7, I think, skated over in the same corner, for a repeat of the first try. 1-2.

The probings of Webby, Harry and Big B, whose hit and spin was proving effective, couldn’t unlock a sturdy defence, and strong Cobras defence from Hally, “The Stallion” Gallop and James G made the half time score 1-2. I asked for us to continue with the excellent defence, but to move quicker out of the line, and to move the ball around more. Poor Monty had to leave the field of play, not to return, as he was not well.

The second half started with us on the attack, and strong drives by G-Man, B, Cam and Webby again, got the position that Jamie excels in, and he went down the short side, then came back on himself, and beat all 9 of the Sharks players, with a combination of fends and steps, to score in the opposite corner. (I have watched the DVD twice now, and yes it was all 9 players!!) Fantastic try. 2-2.

Sharks kept taking the game to us, and were looking more comfortable with the ball in hand. Their approach play was matched by enthusiastic defence, Rocky and Hally, leading the line well, and with the ferocity of Big B and Jamies efforts we kept them out. Further changes were made, Webby took a well deserved rest as did G-Man, who had both run their blood to water, as had Harry too, and Spence, Captain Jack and  Stallion returned to add fresh impetus.

Down field we went, Jack, B, James G and Spence hitting it up, and from about 10 meters out Rocky at acting half scooted, down the short side, and crossed for a simple try 3-2. We couldn’t hold onto this slender lead, as Sharks struck immediatelycrashing over from close range. 3-3.

With about 5 minutes left, both sides went for the win, and Cobras struck first, Hally, Jamie, Cam and B again setting the position for Rocky to scoot again looking for runners, but the space opened up for him to complete a very popular hat trick. Well done Rocky 4-3.

The lead was again short lived, as the hard hitting was taking its toll, and players were looking tired, and concentration levels dropped. Sharks looked sharper and forced their way over again following another excellent offload. 4-4. One more set of 6 each followed, and both sides upped their game, but the elusive score wouldn’t come, as bodies were again put on the line. Full time 4-4.

Another excellent local derby, fought with fantastic commitment and  passion but above all in great spirit. A hard, but fair match up, and a draw was the right result. A special mention should go the referee, who had an outstanding game, and to both sets of players and parents on impeccable behaviour. Well done everyone.

Very proud of everybodies efforts, and great to see all the work being spread out, highlighted with a different top tackler, and Webby leading the way in attack. Brilliant. Still lots of things to work on, namely passing and movement, but all in all a great game of rugby league. We forget these lads are only 8 and 9 years old.

Best of luck for the rest of the season, Colin, and look forward to next seasons meetings already!!

Cobras U9′s show bite against Shark attack!

Posted by Mark Hall On March - 14 - 2010 Comments Off

Crosfields Cobras U9′s  8 v Shevington Sharks U9′s  24

Young Cobras went to a Sharks side who have never been beaten,  put in a display full of character and commitment, and came away with pride in their performance, and many positives for the coming weeks.

A squad of 12 players went to Shevvie, and captain for the day Cameron Henderson actually won the toss, and we had the ball first- a rarity in itself!!

Up with the ball first were AJ, Big B and Spence, but Sharks were superbly drilled and really quick out of the line, playing blitz defence, and metres were hard to come by, however we made good ground, but turnover ball followed. Sharks too were running hard, but were matched in defence, by Big B, Hally and AJ, who were hitting hard and knocking the runners back. They were well assisted by Spence and Harry, and a stalemate followed.

The game was being played at a frenetic pace, but because of the tight defensive efforts, mistakes followed, by both sides, and neither team could get into any rythmn. The deadlock was broken when Sharks scored a very well worked try, wide out to get the scoring underway. 0-1.

Cobras continued plugging away, with Dutchy Holland and Harry probing for an opening, and B, AJ and Cam looking to batter holes in the Sharks line. It stayed strong, however, as we couldn’t find a way through. Sheer strength was not the way, but we couldn’t work that out, despite the coaches directives. A subtle approach would have bourne more fruit, but pure effort and enthusiasm was great to see.

Sharks scored again, when the Cobras defence was breached close to the line, a familiar habit, we need to get rid of, but the response was swift, when Captain Fantastic, Cam crashed over 1-2. This followed excellent approach work by AJ, Webby and the ever direct Timps. James, Olly and Jacob raised their game immediately and were running above their weight, but they too were taking the direct route, and the Sharks line held, and Cam, almost scored again, but was held up over the line. Excellent effort, and superb defence.

One of the moments of the match followed, when a super line break by the Shevvie player, seemed a certain score, but Timps ( not renowned for his tackling!!) came out of nowhere, chased him down, and assisted by Spence saved a certain try. Well done little fella. You lot never cease to amaze me. Half Time 1-2.

Half time team talk was one of sheer pride, and I asked for the same effort, enthusiasm and commitment, as we had a chance for the first time to get close to the Sharks. I asked for us to get the ball wider of the ruck, as their “Hammer Set”  in defence were killing us, and the effect was brilliant, being pefectly executed.

Sharks went up a gear though, in this half, and despite the same effort, the rewards didn’t come. Continually on the back foot, with Hally and B leading the way in defence, we were not getting into position quick enough, and ended up with the wrong people in the wrong positions, which were  cruelly exposed on 3 occasions. Despite a lot of effort the score had become 1-5.

Heads didn’t drop though, and changes saw AJ, Timps and Spence continually make good ground and B and Cam were everywhere in attack. Hally continually racked up the tackles, and Olly was having his best game to date, for the Cobras. Strong drives by Olly, Webby and James, set up by Harry, saw Timps scoot, run straight at the ref (me!!) and score . 2-5.

The game continued and we came strong again, Spence held up over the line this time, but all the pressure went unrewarded. Sharks had the last say, when a superb cover tackle by Cam, stopped the Sharks player, but the tackle was not complete, he player bounced back up, and all the Cobras players stopped. He went down the wing, and 2 excellent fends, saw him cross in the corner 2-6.

The final whistle went, and all players could hold their heads high. An excellent team performance, against a very very good Sharks side, who we matched for long periods of this game, but in the end class shone through, and better execution. Well done both teams for a brilliantly entertaining rugby match. More composure, and controlled approach work will pay dividends eventually, instead of this battering ram approach we seem intent on doing.

Cobras U9′s sneak 16 try thriller in Wigan

Posted by Mark Hall On February - 25 - 2010 Comments Off

Crosfields U9′s 36 v Hindley U9′s 28

Cobras travelled the short distance up the A49 for the reverse fixture against a very very competent Hindley side.

A squad of 13 players were in attendance (we lost one en route), and captain for the day, Zak Cameron lost the toss, and we defended first. It was apparent from the start that Hindley were a much improved side, and they had a few new players too. Cobras were thinking back to the earlier season fixture, and took the Wiganers for granted, and it was plain to see. Some were not focused, and after a set each, Hindley took the lead, when poor defence, but a superb step and turn of speed, saw the huge no.13 race in from half way, untouched. 0-1.

This seemed to wake up the lads, and strong runs by G-Man, Spence and Cam saw Jamie jink his way through from 20 yards out for an equalizer. 1-1. The match was being played at a frenetic pace, both sides entertaining the crowd, and throwing the ball about. Strong first line defence by Rocky, Jamie, Spence and Harry Wilcock, drove Hindley back, but Hindley crossed again and were playing as a unit, Spam and Animal leading the way for them.1-2.

Straight from the play the ball, Jamie scored his second, a top individual score, beating 4 defenders 2-2. Despite some strong defence from some, everyone was not on the same wave length at times, and Hindley scored again 2-3. Changes were made, and G-Man, Webby, Zak and Scooter came off for AJ, James, Monty and Mad dog. All four were straight into the fray, and AJ in particular was putting himself about, making massive yards and putting in big hits. Monty had found his voice, and along with Jack and James was taking the ball up strong; it was good to hear his high pitched shrieking at his own players. Excellent, because some of you are now directing others around the pitch.

Rocky and Monty were distributing well, and we had started to try and pass the ball, which paid dividends as Harry to Jamie, saw a lovely long pass which put Spence into space-great try. 3-3. Half Time. I asked for us again to improve our try line defence, and to move the ball more, and above all be patient. Impressive Hindley defence, scrambling for their lives were rewarded with a turnover, and this saw them gain more confidence, and they crashed over to lead again 3-4. This game really was end to end, and Cobras replied again when Mad dog Taylor held off the tacklers to plonk the ball down for his first Crosfields try, much to his and his team mate’s joy. A well celebrated score. 4-4.

In defence Jamie, AJ, Spence, Harry and Monty were working over time, well assisted by James, Rocky and Cam, but we still couldn’t keep them at bay. Well worked try 4-5. Excellent carries by AJ, Spence and Mad dog saw Rocky show superb power and fend to knock off 3 defenders, with his customary Super League dive 5-5. G-Man came back on for Rocky, and the change gave us new impetus, he was immediately taking the ball up, making huge yards with AJ, and putting the Wiganers on the back foot. A good cross field passing movement saw Spence cross for his second, which was quickly followed by a Jamie howitzer for his hat trick. Finally breathing space at 7-5.

Hindley have a new attitude this time round, and came back strong again, Spam again leading the way. 7-6. Definitely a game for neutrals, but on reflection, and having seen the DVD since, a superb advert for mini rugby league. These little guys, both teams, put everything into this match, and both will play a lot worse and still win. Scooter came back on for Mad Dog who had taken a knock to the head, and immediately got himself on the end of a flowing backline move, which saw him bundled into touch, by superb scrambling defence. Unlucky George. Stronger defence followed, AJ and Jamie still leading the way, and even G-Man was bending his back, and standing out. A sight for sore eyes!! Told you he could do it Mark.

Another great drive by AJ, taking the steam out of the Wigan defence, laid the platform, and with their defence on the back foot, another popular score followed, when pace and poise saw James Geraghty cross the line for his first 4 pointer this season. 8-6. Webby returned for Cam, who had completed another excellent personal performance, and he too got stuck in. 2 sets each, the ref called, who had a very iffy timepiece to say the least!! Searching for that elusive lifeline, the ball went to ground, and first G-Man, and then AJ again took us into position for Harry to find the ever supporting Spence, who completed his hat trick. Excellent support play, Spence is one of a few, who consistently follow Harry, who always creates space for his team mates. 9-6

Hindley’s never say die attitude saw them register the last try, when an exquisite floated pass from Spam found Animal, for a well deserved score 9-7. Zak took the last carry up before a strong tackle knocked the ball out of AJ’s grasp, for the final whistle. 9-7.

Rugby League was the winner again today, and a moral victory for Dave and his players, who have turned a 40-12 loss to us 4 months ago into a very close 36-28 loss now. Fantastic attitude, great spirit and some excellent new recruits.

Cobras had some great individual performances again, none more so than AJ, Jamie, Spence, Monty and also some first time scorers in Mad Dog and James. Brilliant, and the team performance is coming. We need to start better, but most pleasing that we are now all communicating on the pitch. Keep listening and keep smiling, always proud.

Finally a BIG thank you from all the squad, coaches and parents to George “Scooter” JERRAM, who has decided following this game that rugby, is not for him, after 3 years service to Crosfields. Good luck in any chosen sport George.

Cobras Down the Bank in thriller!

Posted by Mark Hall On February - 16 - 2010 Comments Off

Crosfields Cobras U9′s  16  v  West Bank Bears U9′s  12

Beating the over night frost, saw a closely contested match against an ever improving Bears side from Widnes, who are getting closer to us with every encounter. Always a great game keenly fought.

Cobras reduced squad of 12, due to some unavailability, took to the field, captain for the day Tom Worthington, lost the toss, and we started on the defensive. The Bears came out of the traps at a ferocious pace, obviously well up for this derby, and gained good ground, despite big hits from Big B, Timps and Spence. The last tackle saw us camped on our line, and fall for the five card trick, a simple scoot, and great tenacity saw the Bears take the lead 0-1.

Great start for the Bears, and young Cobras hadn’t woken up yet! Ball in hand, and still getting used to me not being on the pitch any more, organising themselves was not coming easy. Brechan carried on his excellent form with a strong drive, carried on by Timps, Cam, and Harry tried to get the line moving, but Bears were getting stuck into us, and mistakes were being made. Turn over ball followed, and a period ensued where both sides, despite a lot of effort got nowhere, in attack, defences and errors on top.

Hally had started to get stuck in, as had Spence, Harry and Little Tom, but Big B was still the player catching the eye. He’s really got his timing of late, and is hurting the opposition. Tom Tom Neary was trying his hardest, but looked a little rusty, being unluckily bundled into touch twice. Timps too had a fantastic break, but the cover knocked him into touch also, when he looked likely to score. A lot of endeavour for no reward.

So the stalemate continued, still 0-1, and changes were made, Jamie, Webby and Scooter replacing Cam, Timps and Monty. Straight onto the attack, Spence and B leading the way, and Hally picked up a pass 20 yards out, and a double fend saw him cross in the corner. 1-1. Bears were not down hearted and came straight back at us, making good ground down field, saw them on our line, when again, after great strength from Webby, Harry and Hally, saw them cross, when a quick play the ball caught us out. Excellent opportunist try1-2.

We finished on the attack, after strong drives by Webby, Jamie and Spence saw us stopped short. Excellent distribution by Scooter, to Big B on the batter, saw  committed defence stop him short-half time 1-2. I asked for us to up our performance in the second half, get out of the defensive line quicker, and get deeper with the ball in hand, running onto the ball, instead of being static.

The second half was the opposite of the first, Cobras coming out of the blocks quicker, but despite better approach work, with Harry Wilcock marshalling his runners, and always probing for gaps, Bears defence held strong. A couple of sets each, with no addition to the score board, then saw a strong drive by B, followed up by Spence and Webby, and Harry continued the move superbly offloading from an impossible position to Jamie 2-2.

The tackling had improved too, and Hally, B and Spence were leading the way, along with  Harry who was putting his shoulder to the wheel, and a flowing move from the Bears, saw Jamie come out of nowhere, to stop Leon dead in his tracks in the corner, when we all thought he must score. Sheer brilliance. We went straight down the other end, and Harry again instrumental fed Spence who ducked and dived to score a great team try. 3-2.

Monty, Cam and Timps returned, for both Tom’s and Big B (getting a well deserved rest) and Timps and Monty both took up the defensive challenge, Timps having his strongest defensive game, in a Crosfields shirt, ever!! Cam, as usual was covering the wings, and we continued the slow improvement. The line was deeper, and on the attack, saw Webby, held short, and unlucky not to score, but having field position Harry again the provider for Cam, who stepped, and outpaced the cover, for a “Rocky”esque dive into the corner 4-2.

Bears came back again, and the second half was exciting, both sides putting everything into it. Hard yards were being made, big hits going in, and the Bears with time running out, had the final say. Big “Mikey” crashed over the Cobras try line for a very popular score, taking “Our Lewis” and others with him!! Brilliant, thoroughly deserved. 4-3. A much better second half came to a close, with Cobras on the attack, and a finely contested game ended, with both sides Winners. Well done to the Bears, always a fantastic encounter and you have made massive strides, since that first game at the beginning of last season. Massive strides.

On a positive note, from our point of view, a second match, without me on the field for the whole 30 minutes, saw us slowly getting to grips with taking charge of the game, and the second half was testament to a patient build up. Keep on listening, keep on smiling, and keep on improving. Strong individual efforts again, and the team performance is coming.

Well done all of you.
